A Roll of Honour column will feature in the Remember When magazine and on the Remember When website. This is to honour those who carried out the brave deeds of local people, previously recorded in the Evening Chronicle, Journal and Sunday Sun. Read

Written by Ray Marshall, this super collection of photographs from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle's picture library gives an insight into the life of people and the changes they experienced in the City Centre of Newcastle during the last century. Read
THEY are loony but exciting - they are degenerate yet, in the 1950s and 1960s they became an institution.
I’m talking about the girls of St Trinian’s of course. In the original book they were a bunch of scheming, evil schoolchildren.
Of course, for the film version they are not much better, but a few were tarted up a bit to add glamour. But everyone loved those St Trinian girls and, looking our picture spread in the latest edition of Remember When, issue 60, you can see why.
But these are not the actual girls in question, this is the Geordie connection, they are the usherettes from Newcastle Odeon advertising the coming of Blue Murder at St Trinian’s in 1958.
They were obviously enjoying themselves, letting their hair down at a local dance hall - I think it may have been the Oxford Galleries, maybe a reader can correct me and, just by chance, maybe a reader was there on the night.
Enjoy the St Trinian’s spread and everything else in Remember When 60.
There are numerous stories - Billy Clark and his years and friends in showbusiness.
Joe Pegg and his young days playing in the back lanes of Byker.
David Reed and how, as a child, he enjoyed the local cinema (even if he did sneak in by the side door an odd time).
There are stories from the Chronicle archives about UFO’s over the North East and escaping bush babies and deer.
As well as School Call and John Gibson’s regular column we are introducing two new items.
The first is Roll of Honour.
I will go back through the Chronicle, Journal and Sunday Sun archives and tell of gallant deeds of local people.
Either in peacetime (rescuing someone from drowning, or even a cat from a tree), or wartime, their name and deed will be recorded in our Roll of Honour, a continuing place for their name on our website.
I am also asking for readers to look at their family and decided if they know anyone who deserves to be remember in the Roll of Honour.
The second item is We're getting married . . . where I will be featuring your old wedding pictures. Just look at page 38 and those fantastic wedding dresses of the 1920s, but surely you can better that - hopefully we will enjoy featuring your families and your wedding dresses in future issues.
But it’s in your shops now - Remember When 60, only 50p and a brilliant read.
Walk with me down Memory Lane.
